i just wanted to say thanks to all you wonderful ladies for your friendships and your excellent book selections. i have had so much fun with all of you.

Did you catch the Ages 10-up part :) I read this book in 5th grade and it has stuck with me ever since. It's a really fast read, but very emotional and thought provoking for a child of that age. It was one of those that really stuck with me and helped me to appreciate what my grandparents and great-grandparents went through during the war when it came to Hawaii. It'll probably only take you a day to read it, but I'm sure it will stick with you. Enjoy!

p.s. I checked the queue on the Hawaii Library system and it looks like there are lots of copies available, so it shouldn't be a problem to pick one up.

I know I'll probably forget to post it and since November has almost come to its end, here is my pick for January--

East of Eden

This book is one of my all time favorites. It may be a little long, but it's really worth the time :) And since it's mostly about the nature of man, what better way to help us ring in the new year by helping is to remember to be good people!

my schedule's getting a bit crazy, as i'm sure everyone else's is too, so just wanted to jot these events down.

i'm unreliable.

since i wasnt sure what day to get the movie for i didnt get it because we were watching the ones we had (charlie brown thanksgiving over and over and over..... maybe i should have returned it.....)

and i didnt want to get it and have it sit for a week or two if we were actually enjoying our movies.

it's not my month to organize the book club get together and i am BUSY to the max so dont plan around me but i love you all and would love to hang if it worked out.

if not, i will still get you the movie fo sho!

so whoever is in charge- tell me the date and as long as i have two-three days notice for it to be delivered i shall have it ready for you!

just to prove i'm not just being flaky: i have 20 tests to grade, 20 papers to grade, 2 lesson plans to create, 1 sub lesson plan to organize (which is even more time consuming), 1 quilt and 1 baby bag for my sewing class due, 1 ward activity, 1 enrichment planning meeting, 1 midnight showing of new moon, and 1 day of jury duty (hopefully only one day) and 1 kid with a bad cold all to take care of in a one week period.

And the book is...

Okay. I just typed this WHOLE LONG POST. And all of a sudden I accidentally closed the window out and lost EVERYTHING! All because I am typing on my husbands laptop...aaargh.

Anyway, I will try to start over again. **Deep breath** Aaaaahh....

Okay, I'm feeling better now. So I have been thinking about what book to choose this month. And I know it's November and we should all be feeling Thanksgiving-y around this time of year. And so when I think about who I am most thankful for, I don't know who pops into your mind...but for me, it's the guy I married 5 years ago. Because he is the one who goes to work day after day to provide me with the life I have.

And so, for that reason I have decided to choose this book for this month


For those of you who know me, you know that I am an avid Dr. Laura fan. So I slightly appologize if you don't like my choice for this month. But I think she makes so many good points in this book. And I think she is right, and I think she is funny. And I think this book is a really easy read.

I have a copy which I will gladly loan to you. I haven't checked if it's available at the library. I imagine it is.

Anyway, I am not picking this book because I feel that we make bad wives. I am picking this book because I think we might learn to understand our husband's better, and be able to show them our appreciation in ways that actually make them feel appreciated. I read this book about a year ago after I found it for $2 at a yard sale, and I feel like many of the points she made helped me...so I hope it might help you.

And if you don't want to read this, then I suggest you read New Moon...because it comes out this month. ;-)

So, as for activity. I am thinking we should make whatever is our husband's favorite treat, leave half of it at home with a love note for him, and then bring the other half to our meeting and just chat like we are so good at. So, what night works for ya all?

So....just as I was finishing the 2nd attempt at writing this book post, I noticed out of the corner of my eye the "auto save feature". And then I realized, "I didn't loose that first post that I spent 20 minutes typing. It's saved in the drafts...duh!" And then I just laughed and laughed at myself.

Okay, for those of you who know me...you know i am an avid Dr. Laura fan. So I slightly appologize if you don't like my selection for this month. I know many of you seem to enjoy reading the classics, but just hear me out a moment.

November is about Thanksgiving and being thankful, right? We all (as far as I know) get to spend a majority of our life at home with our wonderful, sweet, sometimes sassy little kiddos. And who should we thank for this time at home and a little spending money in our pockets, and a roof over our heads? Though sometimes the space may seem small, or sometimes we hate the dishes we have to wash night after night...But the reason we have these dirty dishes is because our husbands have been working all day to provide the food that will go on those dirty dishes.

So, I won't nag at you any longer. I think you get the point plus I'll let Dr. Laura nag at you in this months choice... (THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF HUSBANDS)

Don't get me wrong. I don't think anyones marriages are in dire straights. And I doubt any of you feel you have a "bad marriage". And I don't think any of you are "bad wives". I just know that personally I sometimes don't feel like I understand my own husband from time to time and I've read this book once before and I think it helped. I am choosing it because I feel I could use a refresher, and I think she makes some great points.

I know we are all very thankful for the lives our husband's have provided us. And I think by reading this book, we might be able to find new ways to show him our appreciation. I'm sure we all feel like we say it and show it, but sometimes they feel appreciation in different ways than us. And I think this book does a great job explaining that.

As for activity. I was thinking, we could make our husbands favorite treat, leave half of it at home and then we can meet somewhere and just chat as we like to do. And if there is anything you want to say about the book... great! Where would we like to meet?

The Crucible

So, I finished the play last night. I saw a few acts of this play in high school and still remember thinking what a powerful play this was even at 16, so I was happy this play was chosen. Arthur Miller is such an awesome playwright. "Death of a Salesman" is one of my favorite plays...again, super powerful. He does an amazing job taking a complex and oftentimes far off situation and creating a real story for all of us to relate to and take away some sort of lesson. We empathize with these characters even though we do not live during their time or have lives anything like their own. So what did you gals think? I am unaware of this "camping" expedition, but I still would love to talk about it, or watch Laurence Olivier's classic performance in this play. Isn't it always crazy how the most "Christian" people are always the most judgmental people? Anyway, loved it. What's up for November?

All you have to do is download some Adobe reader program...they have a pretty simple step-by-step guide on how to get started. It's a great alternative to driving down to the library with all the kiddos :)

it is a pretty quick read and it's a play, but the storyline is easy to follow. think Shakespeare in plain english, sorta.

angels and beach walk it is! and not a wednesday for sure since that is a conflict for many- i LOVE the bonfire idea but that is against the rules in these parts these days :( and it's not gonna be an all night kinda thing anyway- just a meet up and chat and then get back to our homes kinda thing if that's cool with everyone!

sooo, how about this:

Tuesday September 1st (before your trip nat if you wanna come!) at 8PM meet at Angels

those who want treats can get them but make sure it is something you can eat as you walk because once everyone has their stuff- if the weather looks nice- we're heading out to the beach. we'll walk from the shopping center down to temple beach and then on to hukilau where I will have my van parked with blankets and we can sit and chat for a bit on the beach and then those who need to get straight home can hop in the van with me after and be dropped off and those who'd like a little more exercise can head back to the Foodland parking lot by way of the beach... but I should have room for all if everyone needs a lift. i could even do two trips or whatever.

it may be kinda dark, but not too dark for a walk at least. the moon will light our way and we'll be in a group together. i love a night beach walk. and you may want to bring a light jacket if you think it will be too chilly for your taste. :)

if it's nasty weather we'll just stay around the shopping center or reschedule.

i was trying to think what book would be most beneficial to this particular group.

i read it when i was a struggling mom of one and now i'm a wiser-but-still-have-a-lot-to-learn mom of two and i promised myself i would read this book yearly.

you will see what i mean if you pick it up and let it get under your skin, into your heart...etc.

i need it to keep me on track so i'm gonna read it again. you wanna read it too?

if you do then great! i am sure byuh library has it but TRUST ME - it is worth buying, having, quoting and so on and so forth. you could probably pick it up at the bookstore and i am sure half.com has some good deals. oh yeah, check that link out- those are some really good deals. nice.

This is by far my favorite book of all time. I'm not going to lie, it's heavy at first, but it quickly turns itself into a study of triumph and is INCREDIBLY inspirational.

well hello ladies! it's been a long time. I have the choice for June, and since I am currently reading the The China Study By T. Colin Campbell...that is my choice for June. It's a really interesting read and I highly recommend it. It gets you thinking.

how does next wednesday night work for everyone? that would be may 27th. i know we usually meet on tuesday nights but since so many of us are in the sewing class i thought that wednesday would work better. 8 pm at my house. let me know if this works for you, if not we can change it to a thursday night or something.

how is everyone enjoying the book? i know westerns may not exactly be everyones cup of tea, but i thought it would be fun to break away from the mold. plus the book is such a quick easy read. it is like your grandpa is telling you stories.

the book i have chosen for may
it is a western novel written by Louis L'Amour. it is a very easy quick read. and it just so happens that i was named after the main character Echo Sackett. i have 2 copies that anyone can borrow if they want. happy reading.

i finally found my copy of the giver yesterday afternoon and i finished reading it this morning.

WOW! what a great story- seriously.

young adult literature is so awesome because the messages are usually just as powerful as regular novels, but it takes like half the time to read. i like that!

Who the Freak is this "Megan" Character?

Hello!!!!! I know, who is the Megan person? Well, that's me. I am Megan. I know most of you. Echo. Stephanie. Liko. Hmmm...guess that's all I know, but I am sooooo excited to get to know the rest of you and to finally be involved in this book club! I love to read! I was an English major, mostly because I didn't think reading awesome literature and writing about it was real work; it was just fun. So, I went to BYUH in 2000, got married in 2002, graduated 2003, had kids 2004 2006 and 2008. I drive a big blue bookmobile. My life is simple, and I like that. So, without further ado, I would like to introduce our April reads:

"The Giver"- yes, this is a must-read story. It's pretty much an afternoon read. Simple, but the themes are super complex. Love it. Gotta read it.

And...

"The Outsiders"- this book was written by a fourteen year old. It is amazing because of that. It's not super realistic, but I think it's one everyone should read.

This month is also my birthday month, so I picked titles that keep us young. Plus, young adult literature is awesome. Easy to read. Great themes. And INTERESTING. So, please enjoy this month's reads! There are two books, but they'll take less time to read than one normal book, I promise. I'm thinking we'll meet the last week of April at my house in Hauula, and of course, good food and conversation are a must! Any food theme ideas are totally welcomed! I'm super excited for this, girls! Thanks for letting me join the club, even though I'm not completely reliable when it comes to meeting...I'm working on it!

i never get tired of this story. i am so in love with mr. darcy and i just love lizzy's personality. i can't help but let out an audible sigh when they finally get together at the end.

Feb Gathering

Hey girls! I'm not exactly sure what I wanna do with the gathering for P&P. My house and living room space is very limited, but if you guys don't mind, I don't mind =o)

I was thinking we could either do our usual hang out at the house thing OR we could spice it up a little bit and meet up a restaurant? Maybe a place like Haleiwa eats or El Mariachi in Kaneohe. Let me know what you guys think!

i dont usually re-read books because i feel like there are so many other books i want to read first but i am having a lot of fun re-reading pride and prejudice as i always do. i wonder why it is the kind of book that can be read again and again. i still feel like i want to know what happens... even though i already know what happens- it's that good!

anyway, how's is everyone else enjoying it?

done and done

well, i finished the chosen today!

it's a library book and it is due tomorrow (feb 3) and so i was determined to read it before we took it back.

i was on like page 30 yesterday morning and i read like 200 pgs. yesterday and finished the rest up today.

wow! what an inspiring book in so many ways! i want to be more of a scholar after reading that- did it make anyone else want to sit at a library and be able to just read book after book and absorb all that knowledge? i was seriously inspired.

i've been in kind of a reading slump lately, and this read-a-thon was the perfect kick in the buns to get reading again.

finished it, loved it

last night i finished 'the chosen' what a great book. i cried. has anyone read any of the authors other books? 

i am excited to start reading P and P. i love that book and i love it even more everytime i read it.

just wanna say

 i for one, LOVE our book club meetings/junk food eating/gossiping nights. 

i love each of you girls so much. and i really appreciate how we have similar beliefs but all have different opinions and ways of doing things. i like that about us. 

i think we are cool.

haha! totally kidding, Megan! Yeah, ummm, our "book" club meetings usually have NOTHING to do with the book, I mean, it started that way and they have morphed into a social gathering of sorts. We talk and eat. So you're welcome to come, if you can, busy mama. No obligations. You can stay for as long or as short as you want.
Oh, and people, I apologize for how in-depth the book goes into Jewish principles and whatnot. I read it a l-o-o-o-n-g time ago and I think I just skipped the parts where they really get into explaining the Talmud and all that. It was a bit much, at times. But, I hope you all enjoyed it, those who have read it.
And Steph J. -- I totally forgot to bring that book to you. So, tomorrow?? Sorry.

i went on tuesday and picked up 9 books for $1.60. yes you heard me right $1.60!! i got up to the register thinking i was already getting a steal of a deal when the lady said it was half price day!! so then i got everything for half off. i was ready to go back and look for more. 

so, if you have not checked out this resource YOU SHOULD!! it is a great deal on used books, magazine,even games for toddlers. i picked up a copy of the chosen along with huck finn, tom sawyer, the scarlet pimpernel, some louis lamours for marc, a make it yourself wood working book and a few crafting books for me. 

if you are a student or know any students, they also have some textbooks and stuff. seriously, check this out!! hours are listed on the side bar----->

okay, so who cares if you didn't read the book. it is a really great story, though, and i recommend that you read it at some point in your lives, if not now...

i was wondering what night would be best for ya'll to meet. how about next thursday, jan. 22, 8-ish at my house? and did you want to watch the movie or just talk? or we could combine it with Echo's Pampered Chef party. please let me know what would work best...and we can bring a snack to share, too. it has to be kosher, though.

haha, just kidding. if you don't get it, it has to do with the book...

has anyone finished this book yet? if so, could i borrow your copy?

also, i will be heading down to the Kaneohe Friends of the Library on tuesday around noon, is anyone interested in coming down with me. they usually have quite the collection of old and classic books. also a pretty good children's section.
