Book for May

I found it! The book I want us to read for the month of May :)

March Book Group

I chose the book Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand for March. Its one that has been recommended to me by several people and I loved the other nonfiction work she published, Seabiscuit. I finished this last week and it did not disappoint. It is the account of a POW in WWII. He was even stationed in Kahuku for a time, so there is a little local war history included in here too.

I will say that it is 400 pages, a rather long read for book group- but it flew by for me and I was done in about 9 days. It was just that good. Hillenbrand (in my opinion) really is the non-fiction writer of our generation.

Anyway, we can have book group at my place in Hauula (let me know if you need my address) on March 27th at 8pm. Also, since I am done with my copy, someone is welcome to borrow it until next book group.

ready, set, read!!

This is my pick for February.  I started reading it a month or so ago, and got about a quarter of the way in -- I got distracted by The Hunger Games trilogy and The Help.  

It's a quick read and she even includes some recipes that I want to give a whirl.  

The author is Sandra Bullock's sister and it's a memoir about giving up her life in crazy Hollywood to pursue her dream of running her own bakery in Vermont.

As for meeting...how about Monday, Feb 20 at 8:00 p.m.?  Bring a snack, healthy or not, if you can!  We can meet up by the pool if you want, bring your suit if you want to swim!

Anyone reading Daughters in My Kingdom? I have been working with this cool book a lot lately since I am teaching out of it for Relief Society in two weeks.

It is a completely marvelous book. If you find a chapter doesn't suit your interest at the time, skip it and move on to the next one. YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

This book touches on what all of us can be and where we come from. It helps us realize our deep purpose in life and our truest potential more than any other source (aside from the scriptures of course) I have ever read.

So, try out a chapter or two. That won't be enough for almost anyone who picks up this book though. It is impressive.

iPhone users can read on their phone through Gospel Library. You can also download it from lds.org and read it on your computer. Many ways to get inspired here.

book club re-vamp

we need to breathe some life back into this club so i have a few ideas on how to improve or at least get us started again.

here are some thoughts on the choice of books:

1. we keep going with the same idea. one girl a month chooses a book

2. we each throw out a few suggestions on books and we assign a book to each month

what do you think about the meetings?

1. we keep going how we have been

2. we assign a specific day each month to meet. for example the 2nd tuesday.

3. each girl takes a month hosting.

4. we always meet in the same place - someones house, laie shopping center, an abandoned shack in the hills

what do you think? any other suggestions?
